Mountain valleys to check out this summer

With about 70 percent of land in South Korea covered by mountainous regions, hiking is a familiar and accessible pastime for many Koreans.

During the summer, Koreans often visit the mountains and spend time in the valleys and riverside to ward off the heat and escape from the daily grind. Here are several popular valleys to visit for the summer.

Achimgari
Achimgari (Yonhap)

Achimgari, a valley located on Mount Bangtaesan in Inje, Gangwon province, is famous for its trekking course.

It has earned its name because you can only plow the fields during the morning (“achim”) as the sunshine lasts for a shorter duration, as it is located deep in the mountains.

Achimgari is well-known for its hiking course of about 12 kilometers that takes five hours to complete. Some of its main charms are the natural paths, rather than man-made roads.

“There aren’t any official hiking trails, the paths are made naturally by the people who walked here,” said Lee Jae-cheol, an official from the Baekdudaegan trail information center. “There aren’t any bridges by the waterside so there are sections where you have to trek across water, which can sometimes come up to your chest.”

However, Lee said the trails are safe enough that beginners can also trek without much in the way of problems. There are also areas near the valley where people can go rafting.

Achimgari sees about 5,000-6,000 visitors during the peak from July to August. Because of the depth of the valley, the water becomes too cold to walk through in colder weather, so it is recommended that visitors come during warmer periods from mid-June to early September.

Eoreumgol
Eoreumgol (Eoreumgol Management Office)

Those looking to escape the summer heat and humidity can find themselves a natural air conditioner at Eoreumgol.

Eoreumgol, located on Mount Cheonwangsan near Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, means “ice valley,” receiving its name from its freezing temperature even during the summertime.

Visitors can feel a cool breeze and even see ice between the rocks. The phenomenon behind this is due to scree formation, where a collection of broken rock fragments from cliffs and mountains form ice between the rocks when water flow is blocked and the temperature drops.

Eoreumgol is a popular tourist attraction that sees about 100,000 visitors annually and was designated Korean Natural Monument No. 224 in 1970.

There is also a cable car that visitors can take to see the view of the valley from above.

According to the Eoreumgol Management Office, visitors are not allowed to cook or put up tents in the area. “This is a location to come and heal your mind,” an official said.

Mount Gwanaksan Nadeul road

There are also mountains and valleys people can visit in the capital city of Seoul.

Mount Gwanaksan, which stretches across Seoul and parts of Gyeonggi province, has numerous hiking trails throughout.

One of its courses is the Mount Gwanaksan Nadeul road, which refers to the trail that begins from the mountain entrance and follows the various streams in the mountain valleys, passing by a lake garden and a mountain spring in the process. The trail is 5.58 kilometers long and easy for people of all ages to walk as it has very little in the way of slopes, unlike other hiking courses in Gwanaksan.

In the summer, they open the downstream area free for the public to swim and play in. The amount of water downstream is affected by the amount of rain it gets during the year. “Water levels are expected to rise after the rainy season,” said an official at Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Refreshing low-cost summer getaways

While South Korea’s Hangang River attracts millions of visitors to its cherry blossom festival in the spring and fireworks display in the fall every year, there are more festivities the river can offer in the summer.

As this year’s Hangang River festival kicks off on July 17, the riverside will turn into a major playground for those seeking a respite from the scorching heat and a getaway from the day-to-day hustle.

Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government under the theme of “Hangang: A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the five-week festival will offer visitors 64 events and activities including water sports, film screenings, outdoor gigs and camping at 11 parks along the river.

The annual riverside festival was first held in 2013 and attracted about 9 million visitors in both previous years. The organizer expects to draw more than 10 million festivalgoers this year.

Scores of tents are set up in Ttukseom Hangang Park, eastern Seoul.

One of the highlights is outdoor camping at the Hangang River’s parks. This year, campsites will be open in Yeouido, Jamwon, Jamsil, Ttukseom and Hangang Parks, along with Yanghwa Hangang Park, newly added to the list.

A total of 530 tents along with shower facilities and barbecue areas will be set up in the five parks from July 18 to Aug. 23. Tent rental costs 20,000 won ($18) per person and booking is available on www.hancamp.co.kr. Last year, nearly 60 percent of the tents were booked, with campsites mostly sold out over the weekends.

One of the most highly anticipated cultural events is a free classical music concert by the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, led by music director Chung Myung-hwun. It is scheduled to be held from 8 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Mulbit Square, Yeoudio Hangang Park. No booking is necessary.

At the same location, the stage will also feature local acts and up-and-coming bands playing contemporary jazz, traditional Korean and classical music every Wednesday and weekend for those who seek a romantic experience.

To appeal to art lovers, late-night film screenings will run from 8 p.m. every Friday and Saturday during the festival period in various locations, including Yeouido, Gwangnaru, Yanghwa, Mangwon, Ttukseom and Jamwon Hangang parks.

Those looking for outdoor, water-based adventures can make their way to a water fight event to be held all day from July 17-19 in Yeouido Hangang Park, where visitors can go on 150-meter waterslides and throw water balloons at each other. A ticket, priced at 20,000 won, can be purchased on www.coupang.com.

Among the most popular events from last year is the Hangang River Box 1 Race to take place Aug. 1-2 and 8-9 in Jamsil Hangang Park. In the event, a group of four people build their own boats from recycled cardboard and race across the river. A total of 800 teams can sign up for the program, with advance bookings needed through http://www.box1race.com.

But the green tide spreading across the Hangang River might leave some of the water-based programs canceled, an official from the Seoul Metropolitan Government said.

Detailed information and booking sites for some 64 events are only available in Korean so far, though expats can get a glimpse into a few programs through the Seoul government’s official English website www.visitseoul.net.

The Seoul city government told The Korea Herald that it plans to release an English-language leaflet to introduce detailed programs in the near future. The leaflets will be available at tourist information centers.

Those unfamiliar with the local language can call and ask for assistance to book a place for the events through the Dasan Call Center at 120, where English, Chinese and Japanese translators are available.

The summer riverside festival will continue until Aug. 23.

S. Korea's auto output, exports shrink in July

South Korea's automobile production shrank slightly from a year earlier in July as a cut in exports more than offset a growth in domestic sales, the government said Sunday.

In July, the country's overall output of cars came to 404,770 units, down 1.1 percent from the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Outbound shipments slipped 2 percent on-year to 258,781 cars, while domestic sales of locally produced cars rose 5 percent to 133,795.

The cut in exports was largely attributed to slow demand in newly emerging markets.

"Despite a growth in shipments to North American states, the country's auto exports dropped 2 percent from the same month last year due to economic slumps in newly emerging markets, such as Russia, while the weak Japanese yen and the euro also ate into the price competitiveness of South Korean cars," the ministry said in a press release.

Domestic sales of imported vehicles, on the other hand, again posted double-digit growth, jumping 22.8 percent on-year to 23,104 cars in July. (Yonhap)

Chung Mong-joon to announce FIFA candidacy in France

South Korean FIFA presidential hopeful Chung Mong-joon said Thursday he will announce his candidacy in Paris later this month.

He told a press conference in Seoul that he will officially join the race on Aug. 17 in the French capital. He will first travel to Georgia on Aug. 12 for UEFA Super Cup, where he will hold talks with key European football officials, and make stops through some European cities before arriving in Paris.

"FIFA was founded in Paris (in 1904) and it's a transportation hub," said Chung, who was a FIFA vice president from 1994 to 2011.

"Around that time, I also hope to meet with UEFA President Michel Platini."

Platini, a former French international, recently announced his own candidacy and is largely seen as the front-runner.

The election for the new president is scheduled for Feb. 26 next year at FIFA's current headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

Incumbent Sepp Blatter, who was elected to his fifth mandate in May, has announced his resignation in the aftermath of devastating corruption scandals.

Aside from Chung and Platini, Jordanian Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein, who ran against Blatter in the May election, could take another crack at the top football job.

Asked to assess his own chances, Chung said, "I believe Platini and I are the leading candidates. I think I have a good chance of winning."

Chung said he hasn't settled on a specific venue in Paris for his announcement, which he said will be made around 11 a.m. local time.

"I don't think it will be easy for a South Korean to run for FIFA presidency," Chung said. FIFA has had eight presidents in its history and seven of them have been Europeans, with Joao Havelange of Brazil as the lone exception.

"But I think this is more than worth the effort, and I will do the best I can," Chung added. "FIFA is responsible for its own problems, but leaders of European football should also be held accountable. If there had been healthy leadership in Europe, those leaders would have guided FIFA toward a better direction."

Seeking more backing for himself, Chung lamented that East Asian neighbors of South Korea, China and Japan haven't built cooperative relationships in international sports scenes.

"I told Yomiuri Shimbun in a recent interview that I have a 99 percent chance of winning if Japan helps my bid," Chung added. "And I really believe that."

Chung has faced criticism of his own that since he, too, has been with FIFA for nearly two decades, he should also hold himself responsible for problems that mar the organization.

Chung insisted Thursday that he believes he did the best he could as a FIFA vice president.

"I always worked in the interest of football and FIFA," he said. "Yet Blatter and Havelange were critical of me. They said I wasn't their friend. Looking back, I think I should have made my points clearer."

In the early stages of his campaign, Chung has pushed an anti-Blatter and pro-reform agenda. He said alleged corruption at FIFA isn't a problem confined to a small number of individuals.

"(Scandals) have reached this point because rules and regulations weren't properly honored," he said. "And such things have become the norm at FIFA."

Chung also said he was concerned that Blatter and other opponents may try to foil his bid, which has only given him the motivation to prepare the best he can for the election.

A scion of the conglomerate Hyundai Group, Chung is a former six-term lawmaker and a South Korean presidential candidate. He said he hasn't spoken to President Park Geun-hye about his bid, but admitted he has explained his situation to some government officials.

"There were some who believed the government should take an active interest (in my bid)," Chung added. "But there were others who were more cautious." (Yonhap)

Lotte feud ignites nationality dispute

“Lotte is a Korean company.”

These words of Seoul-based Lotte Group chairman Shin Dong-bin may be simple enough, but the conglomerate’s nationality is fast becoming an issue of contention.

The controversy over whether Lotte is a Korean or Japanese company flared up again this week amid a bitter succession battle involving the two sons of group founder and general chairman Shin Kyuk-ho.

Lotte, having foundations in both Korea and Japan, has long been plagued by this question. The two sons -- Shin Dong-joo and Shin Dong-bin -- speak very little Korean and 99 percent of Lotte Hotel Co.’s stakes are held by Japanese entities. Lotte Hotel Co. is the holding firm for Lotte’s Korean operations.

In an attempt to undermine his younger brother, Dong-joo recently appeared on a Korean news channel and held an interview in Japanese, which invited anger from Korean viewers.

In response, Dong-bin apologized and made statements in Korean, in an apparent bid to win over public opinion.

“It’s a Korean company. About 95 percent of the total sales are generated in Korea,” he said in Korean.

However, far from garnering clear support for either one, the brothers’ antics have pushed the spotlight onto Lotte’s nationality, an issue that has gnawed at the conglomerate for decades.

Lotte is a household name here, but Korean’s deep-seated historical animosity toward Japan has made the retail giant‘s ”dual nationality“ a weakness.

In Japan, however, many people are said to be unaware that Lotte has ties to Korea, ties close enough to support the claim that the group is in fact Korean.

Several reports from the Japanese media reflect this perspective.

The Nikkei, Japan’s largest business and economic news daily, released reports of the holding company last month, adding that “Lotte Group’s sales of 6.5 trillion yen ($52 billion) is the largest record for a Japan-based unlisted company and is in the same range as listed firms like Tokyo Electric Power Company.”

“Sales of Lotte’s operations in Korea account for about 80 percent,” the paper said. “Based on Japan’s accounting standards, it has 202 affiliates and of them, nine are listed firms including Korea’s Lotte Shopping and Lotte Chemical.”

Market watchers said the reports imply the Japanese public regards Lotte as a Japanese company, regardless of the massive profits generated from Korea.

Japan’s media and public are not alone in viewing Lotte as a Japanese entity.

Following reports shedding light on Japanese dominance in Lotte Hotel, the public opinion here appears to be shifting nearer to that held in Japan.

Up to 99.28 percent of Lotte Hotel, a holding firm of Lotte Group in Korea, is reportedly owned by Japanese companies, including Lotte Holdings, L Investment Company and Kojyunsya.

The affiliates of Japan’s Lotte have also received more than 100 billion won ($86 million) in dividends from the Korean units over the past three years, according to reports.

While the question of Lotte’s nationality remains unanswered, the spotlight is also on the conglomerate’s mysterious management structure.

The government Thursday said it would launch a thorough investigation into Lotte’s complicated governance structure to look into any illegal cash flow.

“The owner family should ensure transparency of its management structure, and stop the fight over who gets control over the company,” Finance Minister Choi Kyung-hwan said in a meeting with reporters Thursday.

“If Lotte doesn’t (make its governance structure clear to the market), there will be corresponding measures taken,” he added.

S. Korea denies Japanese report on Park's trip to China

South Korea denied Sunday a Japanese media report that the United States has asked President Park Geun-hye not to attend China's celebration next month of its victory over Japan in World War II.

"The report is not true," a Foreign Ministry official said. "A situation like that would never happen."

Citing anonymous U.S. government and diplomatic sources, Kyodo News reported that the U.S. government "has urged" Park not to attend the Sept. 3 ceremony in Beijing.

In its English-language report, Kyodo said Park's presence "would send a false message to the world that China has cracked the U.S.-South Korea alliance."

According to Kyodo, Washington has contacted its embassy in Seoul and used other diplomatic channels to express its concerns about Park's potential attendance.

The Foreign Ministry official said it has not yet been determined whether Park will attend the ceremony. (Yonhap)

Low wages, poor working conditions prompt Air Force pilot exodus: studies

Low wages and poor working conditions are pushing a growing number of Air Force pilots out the door, studies showed Sunday.

According to the Air Force, 127 pilots left the military last year, up from 124 in 2013 and 113 in 2012.

It said the majority of those were lieutenants and majors, costing the Air Force much-needed experience and veteran leadership.

Their departures have also hurt financially. The Air Force estimates that it can cost anywhere between 12 billion won and 15 billion won ($10.3 million and $12.9 million) to develop a skilled pilot who is capable of independently executing strategies and training younger pilots.

Separately, in their co-authored paper, Air Force Colonel Jeong Man-hae and University of Suwon professor Kim Dong-joo wrote the Air Force has developed about 150 pilots per year on average over the past decade but has lost 155 pilots per year in the same time span.

Jeong and Kim's study said low salaries compared with pay at commercial airlines, and poor living and working conditions have led to the exodus.

Air Force pilots are also worried about their job stability, and many are being lured by Chinese commercial airlines offering lucrative salaries, the study added.

A survey by Jeong and Kim of 369 pilots across South Korea showed that 52.3 percent are unhappy with their wages.

One active Air Force pilot said in an email to Yonhap News Agency that the mental strain over the volatile security situation on the Korean Peninsula is also a major factor.

"We put our lives on the line every day as we face North Korea in this quasi-state of war," the pilot said, as the Koreas technically remain at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. "The life as a combat pilot may be honorable, but I don't know if there are that many people willing to live under so much stress and be constantly away from their family on weekends and holidays. I think that's the biggest reason for the exodus, and money may be secondary."

Jeong and Kim urged the Air Force to devise measures to better support their pilots and maintain the country's combat capabilities.

The U.S. Air Force offers pilots upwards of $225,000 as a bonus to stay in the service for as many as nine additional years. The air forces in France and Italy also provide bonus pay. (Yonhap)
