Ruling Party Suggested, "Leave Cheong Wa Dae out of the Sewol Investigation," The MInjoo Party "Refused"

On June 22, in connection to extending the investigation period for the special Sewol committee, the Minjoo Party of Korea floor leader Woo Sang-ho said, "We received a proposal that they (Saenuri Party) would extend the investigation period if we excluded Cheong Wa Dae from those subject to the investigation, but we refused." This revealed that whether or not to include Cheong Wa Dae in the investigation was the biggest issue between the ruling and opposition parties concerning the extension of the committee's investigation period.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Exceeds Its Authority: Lee Seok-tae, chairman of the Special Committee for the Investigation of the Sewol Disaster held a press conference at the committee office in Jung-gu, Seoul on June 22. He announces the committee's position on the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries' notice to suspend all investigations by June 30. Kim Chang-gil

At a meeting of the Sewol Task Force (TF) held at the National Assembly this day, Woo said, "We engaged in some behind-the-scenes negotiations with the Saenuri Party concerning the extension of the committee's investigation period, but the Saenuri Party failed to show any sincerity during the negotiations.” Woo added, "The investigation should leave no sanctuary. This isn't something that should be mentioned in connection with the Sewol disaster," and expressed why they could not exclude Cheong Wa Dae from the investigation.

Woo also said, "The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries presented an alternative to extend the investigation period of the committee three months, but the committee has already been guaranteed three months to draw up their report. What are they trying to extend? They are fooling the people.”

The government insists that January 1, 2015, the day that the special Sewol bill was enforced, was the day that the committee began their activities and argued that their investigation period will end a year and six months later on June 30. The opposition party claims that the committee launched its activities on August 7, when the committee was actually formed and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance allocated a budget, and argues that the country should guarantee their investigation period until February 7, 2017.

The Saenuri Party is against extending the investigation period of the committee. The committee has failed to present any specific results and the ruling party believes the opposition party is using the committee to gain the upper hand in a political battle. In a phone conversation with the Kyunghyang Shinmun, Kim Do-eup, the party's deputy floor leader said, "It will be difficult to engage in dialogue if the opposition party turns the negotiations into a political battle by disclosing that the ruling party had presented the condition to exclude the whereabouts of the president during the controversial seven hours."

The special Sewol committee protested the government's position to suspend their activities as of the end of this month. Lee Seok-tae, the chairman of the committee held a press conference this day and said, "The government concluded that the committee's investigation should end on June 30 and notified us that they would cut the number of members by 20% in July. We oppose such notice on the forced suspension of our activities."
