About a week before the 18th presidential election in South Korea, a scandal broke that a National Intelligence Agency agent, Kim, had been illegally trying to influence election by posting comments or clicking "recommended" or "disapproved of" online. Three days before the election, the police announced that they could not find any trace of Kim's comments - even without looking at her log record! This report encouraged the candidate Park and her Saenuri Party to attack the Democratic United Party and Moon for fabricating a plot, and Park won the election. However, on Jan 2nd of 2013, about 2 weeks after the election, the police published a new report. Obviously, Kim used as many as forty ID's to read about 4,000 pages a day for 74 days, with the log record of 310,000, yielding the average log record of 4189 per day or 175 per hour. Also, by "recommending" or "disapproving of" some posts on cooking or entertainment industry, Kim seems to have tried to prevent the materials unfavorable to Park from becoming one of the most popular postings of the day. Her alleged actions are for sure vulnerable to the accusation of election fraud by a government organization. Most importantly, it is not unreasonable to think, if the investigation was timely and accurate, the result of the election could have been different.

Why this is important

My home country, South Korea, had the 18th presidential election a few weeks ago on Dec 19th, 2012, and so far as many as 250,000 people have signed the petition to request manual counting, suspecting election fraud for numerous reasons. http://bbs3.agora.media­.daum.net/gaia/do/petition/read?bbsId=P001&­articleId=130388&objCate1=1&pageIndex=1

However, the current Lee Myung-bak government of South Korea has been completely controlling the media and has already fired or punished 500 hundred reporters or producers. And as the victory of Park Geun-hye, the daughter of the notorious dictator, in this election is already making the situation even worse, no South Korean media has ever spoken for those 250,000 people.

Accordingly, I desperately, yet humbly and earnestly, chose to ask the people around the world to look at our situation. Although South Korean National Election Commission insists they counted the votes manually, lots and lots of South Koreans believe that electronic tabulating system was used. Despite chart ranking, ‘I Got a Boy’ gets positive review from Billboard

The nine ladies of the K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation made their comeback official with the release their fourth full album, “I Got a Boy,” on New Year’s Day. However, despite not receiving the fan fever that the starlets are accustomed to hearing, Billboard’s recent track-by-track review raved at the group’s new found electro dance pop sound.

“‘I Got A Boy,’ their fourth full-length album, is a confident return home with polished K-pop confections that combine elements of forward-thinking EDM, classic and modern R&B, ’80s new wave, and more,” a review in Billboard Magazine said. “It should more than satisfy not only K-pop fans but also listeners of all types of popular music.”

The girls, who are best known for their cute and innocent qualities, took on a new image and a more hip-hop/upbeat dance approach with their newest release, which received only 5.8 out of 10 stars on the listener-rated chart on Naver Music, an online music site. The album’s early release track, “Dancing Queen” currently sits at the No. 2 spot on the K-pop Billboard Top 100 charts after two weeks, whereas the “I Got a Boy” title track is at No. 36 in its debut week.

However, despite the title track’s less than stellar rankings on the chart, the Billboard Magazine applauds the girls for their attempts to mesh various sounds and genres.

“The girls’ first Korean single since 2011 needed to be one that caught everyone’s attention. And boy does it.

“I Got A Boy” is not one sound polished and packaged for popular consumption (like past singles), but five completely different sounds stuffed for widespread music consumption,” said the Billboard Magazine review.

“I Got a Boy” is the first full album that SNSD has released in more than a year after their third album, “The Boys,” was released in October 2011.

Kara first Korean girl group to hold concert at Tokyo Dome

Five-member girl group Kara became the first Korean all-female group to hold a concert at the Tokyo Dome with their “Karaisa 2013 Happy New Year in Tokyo Dome” performance on Sunday.

The concert, which attracted 45,000 fans, was part of Kara’s Japan tour which had the girls performing 12 shows in front of more than 100,000 fans across the country including in Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. Previous to the girls’ concert, the only other girl groups that had performed at the Tokyo Dome recently were the Japanese acts AKB48 and Perfume.

Kara made its Japan debut in 2010 by signing with Universal Sigma. That same year, the group was named the Japan’s top rookie artist by Oricon and received the “New Artist of the Year Award (International)” at the Japan Gold Disc Awards.

Dustin Johnson captures opener of PGA Tour

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) ― Dustin Johnson ended a windy week with a wild ride Tuesday that carried him to the first win of the PGA Tour season.

Despite hitting two drives into native areas that cost him three shots, Johnson never lost the lead at Kapalua. He closed with a 5-under 68 for a four-shot victory in the Tournament of Champions, though it was up for grabs with five holes remaining.

Stricker came within a fraction of an inch of tying for the lead until his birdie putt peeled away from the cup on the 13th hole, which Johnson chopped up for a double bogey. With only a one-shot lead, Johnson pitched in from 50 feet in front of the 14th green to restore his three-shot lead, and Stricker never challenged him after that.

And so, the tournament that didn’t start until the fourth day because of a powerful wind finally ended with a guy who overpowered the Plantation Course.

Johnson, who finished at 16-under 203, won for the sixth straight season. Only Phil Mickelson with nine straight years has a longer active streak of most consecutive seasons with a PGA Tour victory.

“He’s very athletic, and he’s just going to continue to get better,” Stricker said. “It’s fun to watch. You never know what he’s going to do, and he’s got a lot of talent.”

Johnson also added a peculiar footnote to his record. He now has won the last three PGA Tour events reduced to 54 holes because of weather ― rain at Pebble Beach in 2009, a hurricane at The Barclays in 2011 and gusts that topped 40 mph in Hawaii from a freak weather pattern that led to a bizarre season opener.

Johnson moved to No. 12 in the world ranking.

The tournament ended just over 29 hours after it started. Then again, 54 holes were all that was needed to show who was playing the best golf.

“It gives me a lot of confidence going into this year,” Johnson said.

Not since Tiger Woods has a player gone straight from college to winning in his first six seasons on tour.

Stricker put up a good fight on one good leg. He has been feeling a shooting pain down his left side on every shot and limped his way around the most mountainous course on tour for 54 holes in two days. He closed with a 69.

“I knew it was going to be tough, but I gave it run for a little while,” Stricker said.

Brandt Snedeker went 5 under during a four-hole stretch on the front nine to get within one shot of the lead until he closed out the front nine with three straight bogeys. Snedeker had a 69 and finished alone in third, six shots behind. He moved to No. 8 in the world ranking, second only to Woods among Americans.

Masters champion Bubba Watson (71) and former PGA champion Keegan Bradley (70) were another shot back.

Johnson overcame the first threat from Snedeker with back-to-back birdies, and just like that, he was ahead by five and looked unbeatable. And he won by four shots, which would appear to be an easy day of work in paradise.

“It was nowhere near ho-hum,” Johnson said. “I had to really fight hard.”

And he had no one to blame but himself.

His tee shot on the par-5 ninth sailed right into a patch of knee-high grass and short trees, and Johnson never found it. Without showing any fear, he stepped up and smashed another driver, and then reached the green in two dead into the wind and salvaged a bogey. He nearly drove the 12th green downwind for a birdie and a three-shot lead over Stricker, and that’s when the fun began.

Johnson hit driver on the 13th and pulled it enough to land into a bunker and tumble into a native area of high grass, trees and plenty more.

“We found a shoe, some sunglasses, about five or six other balls,” said Stricker, who joined in the search. “There might have been a guy living up in the tree.”

Johnson found the ball, but it took two swings to get it back in play, and he had to two-putt from about 50 feet just to escape with double bogey. He thought his lead was gone as he watched Stricker, so smooth with a putter in hand, stand over his 20-foot birdie putt. It turned away at the last second.

With trouble to the right on the 14th, Johnson was predictable as ever. He pulled driver.

“He hit a couple of wayward drives and opened the door me a little bit, and then he stepped up there with a driver again (on 14), and I’m like, ‘OK.’ But then he piped it, and chips it in,” Stricker said with a smile. “Most guys would have been pulling out an iron or some utility club. It’s amazing that he even did that, to tell you the truth.” 

The eagle chip was the end for Stricker.

Johnson hit a beautiful pitch up the dangerous slope on the 15th for a short birdie to match Stricker’s 10-foot birdie, and he made no mistakes coming in.

“It looks like very little fear in him,” Stricker said. “Because he’ll hit one a little crooked, but he’ll pull out that driver again and try it again. And he pulled it off, especially at 14. That was the deciding shot and chip for the tournament. Expect a lot of good things as he continues his career.” 

And don’t expect it to ever be dull.

Johnson headed to Oahu for the Sony Open, which starts in two days. Stricker was headed down the coast of Maui for three days of vacation with his wife and two daughters before going home to Wisconsin for the next six weeks. 

He is going into semi-retirement, playing only about 10 times this year. And he wants to fix his left leg. More than anything, he’d like to win again and come back to Kapalua, even if that means having to take on Johnson again.

Lionel Messi won the FIFA Ballon d'Or award on Monday as an expected reward for his astonishing 91-goal year for Barcelona and Argentina in 2012.

Aged just 25, Messi has now been voted the world's best player for an unprecedented fourth straight year as the outstanding talent of his generation.

Messi beat his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Spanish champion Real Madrid and Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta, who starred as Spain won the 2012 European Championship.

``To tell the truth, this is really unbelievable to get the fourth award. I am so nervous,'' a typically low-key Messi said, in Spanish, though he wore a black tuxedo jacket with a white-spotted pattern in an unexpectedly flamboyant touch. 

Messi's fourth award lifted him above three-time FIFA winners Zinedine Zidane of France and Brazil's Ronaldo. The old Ballon d'Or trophy for players in Europe was won three times by France great Michel Platini, and Netherlands forwards Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten.

Messi received 41.60 percent of the points in votes cast by national team coaches and captains plus invited journalists, who gave their top-three lists from an original slate of 23 players.

Ronaldo got 23.68 percent and Iniesta 10.91 percent. Ronaldo scored the highest proportion of his points from media, while Messi scored best with coaches.

``Whether I win or not it doesn't matter, it's a privilege to be here,'' Ronaldo, the 2008 winner, said earlier when sharing a news conference platform with Messi. The two national team captains downplayed down their rivalry, though neither chose to vote for the other.

Messi led a dominating night for Spanish teams and the United States women's Olympic champions at FIFA's annual celebration of world football.

Vicente del Bosque won the coaching award for guiding Spain to its third straight major tournament victory at Euro 2012.

Abby Wambach, who scored five goals at the London Games, was named the best women's player. Teammate Alex Morgan was also nominated to become the first American winner since Mia Hamm got the 2002 award.

Pia Sundhage, who also led the U.S. team to gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, won the coaching award for women's football _ then sang from the stage in her acceptance speech.

Barcelona players have now won 10 times in the 22 years that FIFA has awarded a world's-best prize. In 2010, the FIFA world player honor merged with the Ballon d'Or prize awarded to Europe-based players since 1956 by `France Football' magazine.

Messi's goal-scoring record shone in a relatively disappointing year by the high standards of the Catalan club which won just one trophy, the Spanish Cup, in 2012.

Madrid, sparked by Ronaldo's 46 league goals, took back the La Liga title and Barcelona went down to a shock defeat in the Champions League semifinals to eventual winner Chelsea.

Still, Messi defied critics who believe his standards drop for Argentina by scoring 12 goals for the national team in 2012, including five at a goal-a-game rate in 2014 World Cup qualifiers to ensure it leads the South American qualifying group.

Messi's goals also helped give Barcelona, under new coach Tito Vilanova, a runaway lead in the Spanish league this season thanks to a record start of 17 wins and one draw.

Wambach's goals at the Olympics earned her the FIFA prize at the age of 32. She placed third last year.

``Thank you for challenging me every day, Alex especially,'' Wambach said to her rivals on the three-player shortlist, Morgan and five time winner Marta of Brazil.

Wambach got 20.67 percent of the voting points on a 10-player original slate. Marta scored 13.50 percent and Morgan tallied 10.87 percent.

The U.S. players had been serenaded from the stage by Sundhage, who sang a verse of the Bob Dylan song `If Not For You' on receiving the coaching award. Sundhage beat two male candidates: Norio Sasaki of Olympic silver medalist Japan, and Bruno Bini of France.

Sundhage returned to Sweden to coach her home national team after the Olympics, and added more sparkle to the FIFA event by wearing a black and glittery `Sweden 2013' T-shirt to advertise its hosting of the next women's European Championship.

Del Bosque was a more serious, but equally respected, winner of the men's coaching award. Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, who did not attend, was second and former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was third.

The Puskas Award for the best goal in 2012 was won by Miroslav Stoch of Fenerbahce. The Slovakia forward scored with a long-distance volley after a corner in a Turkish league game against Genclerbirligi in March.

Brazil star Neymar was beaten in the fans' online vote as he sought to win for a second time. He placed 13th in Ballon d'Or polling.

All three Ballon d'Or nominees featured in a World XI lineup chosen by the FIFPro group of players' unions comprising 50,000 members worldwide.

They selected a team composed entirely of players from Spanish clubs, with nine repeating their selection from one year ago.

Madrid captain Iker Casillas was selected as goalkeeper. In defense, Barcelona's Dani Alves and Gerard Pique lined up alongside Madrid's Sergio Ramos and Marcelo.

Iniesta was named in midfield with Barcelona teammate Xavi Hernandez and Madrid's Xabi Alonso. Messi led the attack with Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao of Atletico Madrid. Marcelo and Falcao replaced Manchester United pair Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney from the 2011 team.

South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. has increased its presence in the local stock market with its value reaching nearly 20 percent of the total market capitalization, data showed Tuesday.

The market cap of Samsung Electronics reached 223.8 trillion won ($210.5 billion) as of Monday, or 19.26 percent of the market total and up 4.3 percentage points from end-2011, according to data compiled by the bourse operator Korea Exchange.

Samsung’s market cap had stayed below 20 percent after reaching 20.33 percent on June 25, 2004.

Samsung Electronics is estimated to have posted a record operating profit of 8.8 trillion won in the fourth quarter of 2012, soaring 88.8 percent from a revised profit of 4.66 trillion won a year earlier.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s leading automaker Hyundai Motor Co.

accounted for 3.95 percent of the aggregate market cap with 45.9 trillion won, down 0.55 percentage point from end-2011, widening its gap between the country’s No. 1 listed firm.

Hyundai Motor’s smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. held a comparable figure of 1.88 percent with 21.8 trillion won, becoming the fifth-largest listed firm.

The market cap difference between Samsung Electronics and South Korea’s two largest automakers reached an all-time high of 156 trillion won on Monday, rising sharply from 81 trillion tallied in end-2011, according to the data.

Korea’s exports to emerging nations soar

Korea now may have to pay more attention to emerging countries given that the nation’s exports to them have soared over the past decade.

According to government data released Tuesday, Korea’s exports to emerging countries accounted for 72.8 percent of its total exports while outbound shipments to advanced economies declined to 27.2 percent last year.

Officials attributed the changing trend to emerging countries’ relatively fast economic growth and advanced nations’ protracted economic slump.

But the data showed that Korea relies heavily on China as exports to the No. 1 trading partner accounted for 24.5 percent of its total overseas shipments.

Samsung expects to post W200tr in sales

Samsung Electronics is expected to post up to 200 trillion won in annual sales based on a record-breaking year in 2012, the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Last year, the company estimates that it recorded 201 trillion won of sales, while operating profit reached 29 trillion won.

This was because in the fourth quarter, Samsung Electronics is seen to have posted sales of 56 trillion won and an operating profit of 8.8 trillion won. This indicates that sales rose by more than 7 percent compared to the third quarter, while operating profit rose more than 9 percent.

In quarterly estimates, both the sales and operating profit were the highest so far.

Analysts had previously been upbeat about Samsung’s fourth-quarter performance, with many predicting more than 7.5 trillion won in profit.

Smartphone sales were the driving force behind the stellar performance, they said.

“The solid performance was driven by the smartphone sales, and we should pay attention to how much it’s contributing to the company’s overall performance,” said Song Jong-ho, an analyst for KDB Daewoo Securities said.

Last year, Samsung became the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones in terms of sales. In total, it is estimated to have sold up to 400 million handsets. Among them, around half were smartphones. Apple Inc., on the other hand, is expected to have sold about a quarter of Samsung’s annual figure, experts said.

“Our estimates show that Samsung Electronics shipped over 110 million handsets for the fourth quarter,” said Song Myong-sub, researcher at HI Investment Securities.

Up to the third quarter of last year, Samsung Electronics had recorded sales of 145 trillion won.

With the fourth quarter feat, the company will now become the country’s first company to post annual sales of 200 trillion won.

What was more meaningful, analysts said, was that Samsung managed to increase its sales by up to three times the figure in 2008, when the global financial crisis struck. This means the record-high sales were achieved in just a five year span of time, they added.

The firm’s operating profit failed to reach 30 trillion won, but the near 9 trillion won was highly commendable, industry watchers said.

The company will be announcing its official fourth quarter figures later this month. Apple is set to make its announcement on its October-December performance on Jan. 23.

In the first quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics may suffer a dent in its profit, experts predicted, due to having to set aside reserves to pay out to Apple over the patent lawsuit the two are entangled in.

In a previous trial, Samsung was ordered to pay $1.05 billion to Apple for infringing its design. Samsung has appealed and another trial is ongoing to settle the dispute.
