Former spy agency chief faces arrest, indictment
By Kim Tae-gyu
Officials at the prosecutors’ office said Wednesday that they reached a consensus on his indictment and are seeking an arrest warrant for Won. The prosecution had to make a decision before the statute of limitations lapses on June 19, six months after the December 19 election. Under the stewardship of Won, the nation’s spy agency is suspected of having posted comments critical of the main opposition party’s candidate Moon Jae-in, the major rival of President Park Geun-hye. The main opposition Democratic Party has strongly asked for Won’s indictment claiming that the NIS created groups in charge of setting up specific plans and executing them to intervene in the election. In particular, an NIS staffer, a 28-year-old Kim, was accused last December of posting a flurry of negative comments on Moon from her studio apartment in Southern Seoul, which opposition parties claimed was a secret NIS office. Just before the presidential election, police announced they could not find any anti-Moon comments on her personal computer and laptop, raising suspicions of a cover-up. |
